About the Event:

The City Nature Challenge (CNC) is an annual event that brings together cities from all over the world to document and record wildlife in their local environments. SDHS is excited to participate this year in the City Nature Challenge and we invite you to join us as we explore San Dieguito County Park and document the reptiles, amphibians, and other wildlife we encounter!

This is a community science event, where anyone can participate! Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned herp enthusiast, the goal is simple: use the iNaturalist app to upload photos of wildlife you find and contribute to the documentation of global biodiversity.

Event Overview:

  • April 25–28 (Observation): Take photos of wildlife and upload them to the iNaturalist app. You can explore local areas, hike, and observe all types of wildlife.

  • April 29–May 4 (Identification): Join us in identifying the observations submitted by the community using iNaturalist. Help categorize, confirm species, and contribute to the data collection process.

  • May 5, 2025: The results of the challenge will be announced!

How to Participate:

  1. Download the iNaturalist app: This app is free and easy to use. You can use it to capture photos and upload them to the CNC database.

  2. Join the event: While SDHS won’t be hosting the event, we will be attending as participants! You’re welcome to join us as we explore San Dieguito County Park and document wildlife.

  3. Find wildlife: Take photos of any reptiles, amphibians, insects, or other animals and upload them to the app to contribute to the challenge.

  4. Stay engaged: From April 29 to May 4, help with identifying the observations made by others.

What to Bring:

  • A smartphone with the iNaturalist app installed

  • Comfortable clothing for hiking

  • Water, snacks, and a camera

  • Excitement to explore nature!

Why Join?
By participating in the City Nature Challenge, you're helping to contribute to global biodiversity efforts. Whether you’re interested in reptiles, amphibians, birds, or insects, your observations will be invaluable in tracking species and monitoring environmental health. It’s also a great way to connect with other like-minded individuals in the herp community!
