SOLOMON ISLAND SKINK

(Corucia zebrata)

DISTRIBUTION: Solomon Island

SIZE: Up to 30 inches (76 cm.)

TEMPERAMENT: To start may be very shy, but generally adjusts to captivity very well. Males can be aggressive towards each other.

HARDINESS: Extremely hardy when properly set up and maintained.

SEXING: Males tend to be thinner with a larger head. Should be probe sexed.

FOOD: Leafy green vegetables (NOT ICEBERG LETTUCE!!), green beans, Italian squash, carrots, yams, various other vegetables and fruits. May occasionally fed moistened monkey biscuits. Must receive a calcium supplement twice a week and a vitamin supplement once a week.

HOUSING: Babies should be housed in a minimum 20 gallon (76 liter) vivarium, adults minimum 60 gallon (228 liter). Use orchid bark as a substrate. Landscape with anchored branches, driftwood, corkbark slabs, hollow logs, and green moss.

WATER: A large shallow dish of fresh water should always be available. The water should be replaced and dish cleaned daily. Mist frequently or, better yet, use a drip system.

TEMPERATURE/HUMIDITY: Day 78F-90F (25C-32C) gradient. Night 70F-78F (21C-25C.) Moderate humidity with daily misting or a drip system.

LIGHTING: Fluorescent full spectrum/UV radiation reptile light is required for long term maintenance.

HEATING: An under tank heater will provide surface heat. An incandescent bulb in a reflector situated over one end of the vivarium will provide gradient heat. Since these skinks prefer subdued lighting, it is recommended that a red or black light bulb be used.

GENERAL NOTES: Due to their nocturnal nature, these animals are more inclined to eat at night.
