LEOPARD GECKO

(Eublepharus macularis)

DISTRIBUTION: India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran 

SIZE: Up to 9 inches (22.9 cm.) 

TEMPERAMENT: Generally good disposition, readily tamed. Males need to be kept separate. 

HARDINESS: Extremely hardy and easily maintained. Capable of living 15+ years. 

SEXING: Males have pre-anal pores and hemipenal bulges.

FOOD: Crickets, mealworms, kingworms, waxworms, butterworms, and pinkie mice. All food items should be nutrient fed and dusted with calcium twice a week and vitamins once a week. 

HOUSING: Minimum 5 gallon (19 liter) vivarium for a single animal or 10 gallon (38 liter) vivarium for a pair of animals. Use a sand substrate, never use beach sand. Rocks, cholla wood, driftwood, hollow logs and cork bark slabs may be used to landscape. A hiding place that the animal can get under should be provided. 

WATER: A shallow water dish should be provided. 

TEMPERATURE/HUMIDITY: Day 82F-90F (28C-32C) gradient. Night 75F-80F (24C-27C.) Favorite hiding places should be moistened every other day to provide some humidity and aid in skin shedding. 

LIGHTING: Leopard geckos are nocturnal creatures. No lighting is required. 

HEATING: Under tank heaters of appropriate size will provide bottom surface heat. A thermometer should be used. 

GENERAL NOTES: Most ground dwelling desert geckos may be kept in the same manner as the leopard gecko. This includes African fat tail geckos (Hemitheconyx caudicinctus), banded desert geckos (Coleonyx variegatus), Stenodactylus species and Teratoscincus species.
