KINGSNAKES/MILKSNAKES
(Lampropeltus species)

DISTRIBUTION: Most of the continental USA south into northern South America.
SIZE: Up to 6.5 feet (195 cm.)
TEMPERAMENT: Can be very docile. Hatchlings and fresh caught individuals may bite and release a foul smelling substance from their anal vent. Frequent handling and time spent in captivity usually results in very tame animals. These animals should be housed individually due to their cannibalistic tendencies.
HARDINESS: Extremely hardy and easily maintained.
SEXING: Should be probe sexed.
FOOD: Nutrient fed rodents. Some species eat lizards and need to be weaned onto rodents.
HOUSING: Adults can be housed in a minimum 20 gallon (76 liter) vivarium. Pine shavings, aspen, orchid bark, sand, or potting soil may be used as a substrate. Corkbark slabs, branches, driftwood, cholla branches, hollow logs, and rocks may be used for landscaping. A hide box can also be utilized.
WATER: A small heavy crock with fresh water should be available at all times. Clean daily.
TEMPERATURE/HUMIDITY: Day 75F-88F (24C-31C) gradient. Night 65F-72F (18C-22C.) Low to moderate humidity.
LIGHTING: Fluorescent full spectrum/UV radiation reptile lights are helpful but not essential for maintaining these snakes.
HEATING: An under tank heater will provide 24 hour surface heat. Placing an incandescent bulb in a reflector at one side of the vivarium will provide supplemental daytime heat. Use a thermometer.
GENERAL NOTES: Montane (Mountain) species should be kept at slightly cooler temperatures.
