GIANT DAY GECKO

(Phelsuma madagascarienses grandis)

 DISTRIBUTION: Madagascar 

SIZE: Up to 10 inches (25 cm.) 

TEMPERAMENT: Initially may be very nervous. Does not adjust well to being handled. Males are very territorial and should not be kept together. 

HARDINESS: Extremely hardy when properly set up and maintained. 

SEXING: Males have pre-anal and femoral pores. 

FOOD: Nutrient fed crickets, mealworms, waxworms and butterworms. Also should be fed nectars and sweet fruits. Must receive calcium supplements twice weekly and vitamins once a week. 

HOUSING: A pair of adults can be maintained in a minimum 20 gallon (76 liters) vivarium. Use either potting soil or orchid bark as a substrate. Landscape with branches, driftwood corkbark slabs, rocks, green moss and sturdy live or artificial plants. 

WATER: Use a shallow water dish filled with fresh water. Replace water and clean daily. A drip system should be installed. If not possible, mist frequently. 

TEMPERATURE/HUMIDITY: Day 76f-88F (24C-31C) gradient. Night 68F-75F (20C-24C). Moderate to high humidity provided be drip system or frequent misting. 

LIGHTING:A fluorescent full spectrum/UV radiant reptile light is required for long term maintenance. 

HEATING: An under tank heater will provide surface heat. An incandescent bulb in a reflector hood situated at one end of the vivarium will provide gradient heat. 

GENERAL NOTES: All species of Day Geckos (Phelsuma) can be maintained under the same conditions.
