ARGENTINE HORNFROGS

(Ceratophrys ornata)

 DISTRIBUTION: Argentina, southeastern Brazil.

SIZE: Females up to 6 inches (15 cm), males to 4 inches (10 cm).

TEMPERAMENT: Can be very aggressive, will bite. Froglets and juveniles should be h oused separately. Adults of like size may be housed together.

HARDINESS: Very hardy when properly maintained.

SEXING: Adult males are smaller with dark throats. In breeding prime will develop nuptial pads on inner toes on front feet.

FOOD: Nutrient fed crickets, fish and rodents. Should receive a vitamin/calcium supplement once a week. Beware of overfeeding. Froglets should be fed every 2 days, juveniles every 3-4 days and adults every 5-7 days.

HOUSING: Froglets should be housed in a minimum 2.5 gallon (9.5 liter) vivarium, adult in a 10 gallon (38 liter) vivarium. Gravel should be used as a substrate. Make sure gravel is small enough to pass through the animal if ingested. Froglets and juveniles should just be kept in water.

WATER: Water must be dechlorinated/dechloramined. A shallow dish sunk into the gravel level is best. Clean daily as these animals tend to defecate in their water. For froglets and juveniles, water levels should come to just below their chins.

TEMPERATURE/HUMIDITY: Day 75F-84F (24C-29C). Night 72F-78F (22C-26C). Froglets and juveniles do best at a constant 80F-84F (27C-29C). Keep the humidity high.

LIGHTING: No special lighting required.

HEATING: An under tank heater will provide sufficient heat. Low wattage incandescent bulbs in a reflector can be used for supplemental heat. Red or black bulbs are recommended.

GENERAL NOTES: All other horned frogs (Ceratophrys species), African pixie frogs (Pyxicephalus adsperus), Budgett’s frogs (Lepidobratrachus laevis), and water holding frogs (Cyclorana novachollandiae) can be maintained the same as Argentine Horned Frogs.
