exceptional creatures. |

Society members are dedicated to
educating the public through school programs, meetings, published documents,
this website, and at public events.
Herpetology (from
Greek: ρπετόν, herpeton,
"creeping animal" and λόγος, logos, "knowledge")
is the branch of zoology concerned with the study of amphibians and
reptiles.
Herpetology offers benefits to humanity in the study of the role of
amphibians and reptiles in the global ecology,
especially because amphibians are often very sensitive to environmental
changes, offering a visible warning to humans that significant changes are
taking place.
Some toxins and venoms produced by reptiles and amphibians are useful in
human medicine. Current
research has found some snake venoms can be used to create anti-coagulants that
work to treat stroke victims and heart attack cases.
Also there are indications venom can be used to break down cancer cells,
treat seizure disorders, act as an analgesic for chronic pain and help
make cheaper forms of diabetes and blood pressure medications.
People with an avid interest in herpetology and who keep different
reptiles or amphibians, often refer to themselves as "herpers." Many
herpetological societies exist today, having been formed to promote
interest in reptiles and amphibians, both captive and wild. |
NON-NATIVE SPECIES ACT HR669
On January 26, 2009 a bill was introduced in the U.S.
House of Representative to limit the import of non-native species of animals
into the U.S. We provide for you here links to the actual text of the
bill and a legislative analysis of the potential impact of the enactment by
the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council.

The HR669 Text
The PIJAC
Analysis
"This house bill is of MAJOR concern! Please
take time to read through it and respond accordingly to your government
officials as it threatens our ability to possess nonnative species and
could destroy a huge portion of the pet industry in already difficult
economic times. Feel free to pass this on to your friends that have exotic
pets of all types – birds, guinea pigs, various rodents and much more will
be negatively impacted if this sweeping bill passes!
