IGUANAS

The Green Iguana Society reports some 10,000 iguanas come in to rescue in the United States each year.  This qualifies them as the most discarded pet reptile in the industry.

Why are so many iguanas in need of rescue?  Primarily it is due to lack of education.  People do not realize that the cute little 8 inch green iguana baby they bought at the pet store has the potential to grow into a 6 foot, 15 pound giant.  The diet of this herbivore requires far more effort than pellets - it is complex and involved and fresh food must be provided on a daily basis.  In the first year cage size requirements will more than triple!  He or she will require a large arboreal habitat (6ft x 6 ft x 3ft) and behavior can range from aggressive to affectionate.   This is a wild animal and while the exceptional tame specimens do exist, it takes great effort and dedication to reach that point.  Even the most gentle male can do a full Jekyll and Hyde impersonation when hormones flair.  Females can go from healthy to dead if they do not have an appropriate place to lay their eggs.  (Female igs are like chickens - eggs happen with or without a male.)

So...have we scared you away yet?  Many people question why we come out so strongly before you ever see a smiling iguana photo (which is undeniably cute!).   Our goal is to find permanent loving homes for every iguana that comes our way.  But, we can not achieve that goal unless the animal is going to a well educated home that is fully aware of the pros and cons of iguana ownership.  This is potentially a 25+ year commitment!   We want you to know what you are getting into before you bring that impish green critter home!

Our iguana adoptions are handled in 2 different methods.  Owner Listed and Society Listed.  Owner Listings are posted on our website free of charge.  We do have content requirements  (photos and specific information) but, we offer no recommendation or guarantee on the animals listed.  This is a courtesy listing and you will be dealing directly with the owner.  SDHS gains no benefit from these listings and it is offered as a community service.  Contact information for the owner will be listed in the description - we can not control the response or provide any information beyond what is posted.

Society Listings posted on our website are animals and owners that we are working with directly.  SDHS will handle all questions, pre-screening and placement of Society Listed Iguanas.  SDHS will make the final decision on the adoptive placement of these animals.  We do not "give" iguanas or any other animal away for free.  Adoption fees are determined on an individual animal basis and are jointly met by the original owner and the new adoptive owner.

Finally.... Click HERE to see the smiling faces of available iguanas and to read their story.  Contact information for the iguana is located on the bottom of their "Bio Page".
